For the Love of Showing Horses and Ponies

Jodhpur boots are used on all show ponies (plaited/show hunter) apart from the 153cm show hunter/working hunter ponies where you use long boots.
Jodhpur boots are also used on Mountain and Moorland small breeds too, whether a child or adult rider. The exception to this rule is the Welsh Section Cs, where a child will wear a jodhpur boot and an adult will wear long boots.
You wear long boots for intermediates, 153cm show hunter ponies, Mountain and Moorlands large breeds and horse classes, including cobs.
Your long boots can be a sportier style, rounder tops and zips, or a more traditional hunting boot. If a man is riding in hunting boots they can have tops, optionally. If women wear hunting boots, they ideally won’t have tops but this isn’t a rule so much as a fashion. Regardless, if hunting boots are worn, they should ideally have garter straps, again more of a fashion thing than a rule.
If you don’t have long boots and are in a class that requires them, jodhpur boots with matching leather chaps will be sufficient.
When using jodhpur boots, you should use jodhpur clips to keep your jodhpurs in place. Some jodhpurs have them built in, made of elastic, though I always think these are a little dangerous as they wouldn’t give if you were to get dragged etc.
Whatever you wear, make sure they are clean and well polished.
